Homemade Chicken Treats

This was a great activity for not only myself but even our 4 month old! It was relatively easy and prep time was minimal. The longest thing was waiting to have enough bacon grease!!

I made this recipe for my chickens but it can very easily be changed to suit your local birds!

Start with a large clean surface like a kitchen table. You will need to collect the following:

  • 4 6 inch baking tins-greased
  • Large bowl, measuring cup and Tablespoon
  • 3 cups Birdseed
  • 2 cups Chicken layer feed
  • 1/4 cup Oats preferably rolled
  • 1/2 cup cracked corn
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (melted)
  • 1/2 cup bacon fat (melted)
  • 1TBS Cinnamon, Cayenne pepper, garlic powder
  • 1TBS flaxseed
  • Room in the freezer for freezing!!
  • Straw to make a hole if you want to hang

Start with your large bowl Add in your dry ingredients Next pour in the melted peanut butter and bacon grease Combine completely until the mixture looks wet Grab your greased cake tins and add the mixture to it Now gently use the base of a glass or your hands to press the mixture down tightly. Optionally you can use a straw to add a small hole to string the block up Freeze for 3-6 hours Remove from freezer and knock the blocks gently out. Either feed immediately or wrap in beeswax warp/plastic wrap

If you decide to hang them, remember they need to be cold enough to hold together!

Also keep in mind chickens diet should be mainly layer feed and only about 10% “treats”. Through the winter I like to make sure they stay healthy and warm, treats like this also help with boredom if they are stuck in the coop/run through the winter!

Let me know if you think you’ll try this! Either for your chickens or birds!
